SBCS donates to Pregnancy Resource Center & Catholic Charities in community

The students and staff at St. Benedict Catholic School enjoyed some friendly competition which ultimately led to them putting their #faithinaction through donating to local organizations in town this semester.

In October, the three grade bands competed against each other to see which group could donate the most items for the Pregnancy Resource Center of Atchison. The students were asked to provide items such as infant medicine, diapers, toiletries, and more to ensure that all the needs of the PRC were met. The Pregnancy Resource Center of Atchison is a local, pro-life organization that offers free and confidential assistance to pregnant women and families with young children in the area.

In order to encourage students to bring more items for the baby item barrel drive, our Servant Leaders held a competition at the end of a Monday Prayer Service near the end of October. Two servant leaders were chosen to represent grade band: Kindergarten to 2nd, 3rd to 5th, and 6th to 8th. Each pair was then blindfolded and then had to guess baby food flavors; the winning team earned baby items to be put in their grade band's barrel. At the end of the baby food competition, all three of our servant leaders teams tied, earning items like diapers, baby shampoo, infant medicine and more for every barrel! By the end of the month, the school collected over 225 items, which the Servant Leaders delivered to the Pregnancy Resource Center.

Throughout the month of December, SBCS, Trinity Lutheran, and Atchison Middle School competed to collect the most items between the three schools for Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas. All of the schools did an amazing job by bringing in well over 1,850 items combined!

At an assembly before Christmas Break, Mr. Lunsford announced that our school won the competition between the three schools by bringing in the most items, coming in at 784 items! This means that our school earned an extra non-uniform day (which will be announced in January) AND the Servant Leaders dressed up Coach Bartlett as a Christmas tree as a reward! While a few of the servant leaders dressed up Coach with Christmas lights, garland, ornaments, and more, a few other Servant Leaders ran reindoors races as the rest of the school cheered on.

By assisting the Pregnancy Resource Center and Cahtolic Charities, our students were able to see how they can put their faith in action to serve families of different backgrounds in our region, treating them with love and dignity.
