Ms. Greger’s message to 8th graders: Look back on time here with joy and gratitude

Excerpts from middle school Social Studies student teacher and Enrichment Director, Ms. Audrey Greger’s graduation speech to the 8th grade:

One of my favorite memories with you was planning and performing the Shadow Stations of the Cross during Lent. Just a few days before the performance, we realized there was still quite a bit of work to be done. I thought that if I smiled big enough, you might believe that everything was under control! But when I asked, “Do you guys feel ready for this?” I was met with a resounding “no.” And yet—on the day of the performance—I was unbelievably proud of how each of you stepped up, played your part, and created something beautiful for your classmates and for the whole school. I hope that experience is something you’ll look back on with joy and gratitude.

I was also so thankful to join you for your eighth grade retreat earlier this month. It was wonderful to see you spending time with classmates you don’t usually talk to, and cheering each other on as you took on the rock wall and the power pole. One of the most meaningful moments for me was sitting around the campfire with your class—listening to you share memories, express gratitude for your time at SBCS, and talk about your hopes for high school. Many of you spoke about how special it’s been to be part of a school community that truly loves you. And everything I’ve experienced here points to that being true. In just a few short months, I’ve witnessed your families, teachers, and so many others at SBCS making sacrifices to help you grow into the best student, athlete, and person you can be. You are part of something truly special here.

That night around the campfire, you also shared your hopes—and your nerves—about beginning high school. What an exciting time in your life! These next few years will offer so many opportunities to grow—academically, athletically, spiritually—and to discover more about who you are and what God is calling you to become. You might be feeling a mix of excitement and uncertainty—and that’s okay. The one piece of advice I want to leave you with is this: remember that you are always awaited by Love. In every part of your life, Jesus is there—offering Himself to you, waiting patiently to reveal more of His love for you, who you are, and the purpose of your life.

Each of you has been created for greatness—truly. And you’ve been well-formed here at St. Benedict’s, where you will always have a home. So as you step into high school and beyond, carry with you the gratitude for what you’ve received here—because good things are ahead of you, and the world needs you.
